María Muñoz López
Interdisciplinary artist and facilitator
María Muñoz López (1994, Madrid, Spain) is an interdisciplinary artist and facilitator based in Switzerland since 2019. Her practice spans contemporary music, free improvisation, physical theater, and visual arts, often blending and transcending traditional boundaries. Recently, she participated in physical theater modules at the Jacques Lecoq School in Paris and ArtHaus Berlin, enhancing her teaching skills and expanding her physical expression.
María seeks to transform the musical paradigm by integrating performative arts. She is dedicated to reimagining creative processes, aiming to break the fourth wall and to transform the audience from mere observers into active participants. Her latest projects involve collaborative theater work, where she partners with fellow artists to create collective, personal, and non-hierarchical experiences. María is passionate about the potential of the arts as a tool for personal development, creativity, and support for misunderstood or educational groups.
She studied contemporary music and free improvisation at the Musik Akademie Basel, where she graduated in 2022. Additionally, she completed a postgraduate degree in mixed media arts in collaboration with the FHNW Academy of Art and Design Basel. Before that, she participated in an Erasmus program at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar, completing her fine arts degree, which she had started at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
María is a member of several new music and experimental ensembles, including Axis Modula, Ensemble Lemniscate, Latenz Ensemble, Insub Meta Orchestra, and Neues Orchester Basel, and she has also collaborated with KlangLab, Neuverband, Diagonal Ensemble, and Basel Sinfonietta. She has performed at prestigious European festivals and venues including Gare du Nord Basel, Theater Basel, Musica Strasbourg, Warsaw Autumn, Bruit de la Musique (France), Ostrava New Music Festival, Münchener Biennale – Festival für neues Musiktheater (Munich, Germany), Festival Internacional de Granada, Impuls Festival Graz, ZeitRäume Basel, Labor Sonor Berlin, realtime – Festival Internacional de Música Contemporánea de Bremen, BRANDNEU 2022, Kassel, Philharmonie de Paris, Goetheanum Arlesheim, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Auditorio de Zaragoza, Baluarte Pamplona, Ateneo Rumano (Bucharest), Auditorium Stravinski, and KKL Luzern.
She has collaborated with and learned from renowned musicians including Gordan Nikolić, Ashot Sarkissjan, Geneviève Strosser, Andrea Neumann, Hanna Hartmann, Alfred Zimmerlin, Fred Frith, Uli Fussenegger, Mike Svoboda, Sarah Maria Sun, Sergey Teslya, Christian Zacharias, Johannes Kalitzke, Juanjo Mena, Jürg Henneberger, Christian Wolff, Petr Kotík, and Heinz Holliger.
